Special thanks to Rick Benjamin from the incredible Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and Ragnar Hellspong for their kindness and advice and for sending me some authentic ragtime scores from a century ago.  And extra-special thanks to my good friend and orchestration guru Joshua Feltman for painstakingly going through the full score with me note by note and making dozens and dozens of helpful suggestions.  And as always, a tremendous thank you to the National Opera Association for running this competition and for all of the work they do to promote opera and music education across the country.

Next up will be the premiere of Anne Hutchinson on January 25 and 26th in Boston with Intermezzo Opera, and the premiere of Freedom Ride later on this year in New Orleans!

Still more press for An Embarrassing Position

It’s been a few months since the 9th Ward Opera Company‘s production of An Embarrassing Position at the Marigny Opera House, but this extremely kind piece from author Michael Allen Zell just came out a few days ago.  Thank you again to Kathleen Westfall, Danielle Edinburgh-Wilson, Dave Hurlburt, and the entire cast and company!

Great press from New Orleans

I am so pleased that The Ninth Ward Opera Company sold out all four of their performances of An Embarrassing Position!  This is a terrific company, and I was honored to be able to work with them at one of my favorite venues, the Marigny Opera House.

We were fortunate to received extraordinarily good press from both the New Orleans Times-Picayune and The Examiner, and I’d love to share the review and the interview with you here.

Four Poems by John Donne now online

I have taken a leap into the 21st century, and will slowly begin posting some of my music online on SoundCloud.  First up are my Four Poems by John Donne, commissioned by Alecia Batson, and premiered by her and Leonardo Ciampa back in 2011.  This recording is from this past September at the CUNY Graduate Center, as part of the memorial concert for Ora Frishberg Saloman.  The fantastic performers are soprano Mary Thorne and pianist Jin-Ok Lee.
