An Embarrassing Position — now with orchestra!

It’s been one year in the making, but this weekend is the orchestral premiere of An Embarrassing Position at the National Opera Association convention in New York!  The performance, the result of winning the Chamber Opera Competition last year, will be presented Friday night at 9:00pm at the Roosevelt Hotel with the Hunter College Opera Theater and a 12-piece ragtime orchestra from the Manhattan School of Music.

Special thanks to Rick Benjamin from the incredible Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and Ragnar Hellspong for their kindness and advice and for sending me some authentic ragtime scores from a century ago.  And extra-special thanks to my good friend and orchestration guru Joshua Feltman for painstakingly going through the full score with me note by note and making dozens and dozens of helpful suggestions.  And as always, a tremendous thank you to the National Opera Association for running this competition and for all of the work they do to promote opera and music education across the country.

Next up will be the premiere of Anne Hutchinson on January 25 and 26th in Boston with Intermezzo Opera, and the premiere of Freedom Ride later on this year in New Orleans!

Still more press for An Embarrassing Position

It’s been a few months since the 9th Ward Opera Company‘s production of An Embarrassing Position at the Marigny Opera House, but this extremely kind piece from author Michael Allen Zell just came out a few days ago.  Thank you again to Kathleen Westfall, Danielle Edinburgh-Wilson, Dave Hurlburt, and the entire cast and company!

In other New Orleans News, my opera Freedom Ride is still chugging along.  Please visit the website, www.freedomrideopera.com, for more pictures, videos, news, and my extremely intermittent blog!

Because An Embarrassing Position was the winner of last years National Opera Association‘s Chamber Opera Competition, this production will be repeated with a slightly different cast at the National Opera Association convention on Friday night, January 10, where it will also mark the premiere of the opera’s orchestrations.  Thank you to everyone at the NOA and at Hunter College for this incredible opportunity!
